Budapest Meeting Report
This was held as part of the European Palaeobotany and Palynology
Congress at Budapest, July 2010 (http://www.eppc2010.org/ ). Among
those present were Chris Cleal, Barry Thomas, Jason Hilton, Sarah
King, Janine Pendleton, Stanislav Opluštil, Zbynek Šimunek,
Milan Libertin, Josef Pšenicka, Marzena Oliwkiewicz-Miklasinska,
Arden Bashforth, Evelyn Kustatscher, Desa Djordjevic-Milutinovic
and Mihai E. Popa.
A business meeting was held on the afternoon of the Thursday to
discuss the initial phases of the project. It was agreed to hold
the inaugural meeting at Zonguldak, Turkey, during the last week
of September. The 2011 meeting would be at Zagreb, Croatia. A final
meeting in 2014 would be held in Padua, Italy as part of the next
European Palaeobotany and Palynology Congress. Evelyn Kustatscher
also agreed to organise a workshop in Italy for palaeobotanists
to examine the available macrofloral record from the southern Alps.
On the Friday afternoon, a symposium in the conference included
a series of presentations relating to the present project and IGCP
469. Chris Cleal gave a summary of the final report of IGCP 469
and showed a pre-publication copy of the report which to soon appear
in the Netherlands Journal of Geosciences. Barry Thomas presented
the results of his investigations on lycopsid palaeobiogeography
that partly arose from IGCP 469 and partly from his recent visit
to North America. Marzena Oliwkiewicz-Miklasinska gave an introduction
to IGCP 575 especially with reference to the work that the Kraków
team had been doing in the Balkans. Desa Djordjevic-Milutinovic
summarised the evidence of Stephanian floras from Serbia. Sarah
King presented the results of her studies on Pennsylvanian and Cisuralian
plant biogeography in Europe and China. Janine Pendleton reported
on her work on the palaeoecology and stratigraphy of the Bristol
Coalfield. Arden Bashforth spoke on his work on marginal wetland
habitats in the Euramerican coal swamps.
